Strategy: The Ravenswood Promise

In Summer 2023, we kicked off an essential and transformative journey to reimagine the Ravenswood educational experience. Through this community-centered strategic planning process, we will collectively define the Ravenswood Promise: our shared vision of what we want to be true for students AND a community action plan to help us get there. Through this work, we seek to empower students to realize their unique talents and capabilities, ultimately shaping a brighter future for themselves and their community.

We invite all members of the Ravenswood community to join us in shaping this vision and bringing it to life. Over this 18-month journey, your voice, perspective, and engagement will be key to our shared success. Help us build a Ravenwood educational experience that is not only exceptional, but transformative for all!

Vision Team / Equipo de Visión

In October 2023, we convened a group of 50+ families, students, staff members, and community partners to form the Ravenswood Promise Vision Team. We also formed a Student Vision Team consisting of over a dozen middle school students at CCRMS. Over the course of several months, these teams were instrumental in bringing community voice to the development of our shared vision for all Ravenswood students.

Here are just a few of the highlights from this phase of work:

75+ community conversations were held with families and local organizations
60+ empathy interviews were conducted with students, families, and staff
22 team members visited Lindsay Unified to learn from their district's transformation
20 families joined our Parent Leadership Academy
1 learner profile was drafted and refined by the community

Learner Profile / Perfil del Alumno

In Spring 2024 we formally unveiled the Ravenswood Promise Learner Profile - a shared vision of what we want to be true for our students. Written with input from 500+ community members (and featuring designs by our middle schoolers!), this profile will inform the actions all of us must take to uphold our promise to stuents.

What is a learner profile and why does it matter?

A learner profile is a succint and student-centered resource that defines the outcomes we want to be true for our students when they leave school (including the skills, experiences, and knowledge we want them to have.) This helps create agreement across the community about what is most important and what changes are needed.

What are some tangible ways we can use this learner profile in Ravenswood?

Our learner profile will:

- Give students a way to think and talk about their progress in school in ways that feel relevant and important to them
- Help families and teachers stay on the same page about what matters most during parent-teacher conferences
- Support more focused teacher professional learning opportunities
- Guide the way the district seeks out and distributes funding and other resources including extracurricular opportunities
- Help our schools and the district make better hiring decisions
- Serve as the “north star” for our strategic planning efforts

How were community members included in the creation of the learner profile?

The learner profile was first drafted by the Ravenswood Promise Vision Team based on the themes and insights pulled from community conversations and empathy interviews. In the weeks leading up to the publication of this profile, we solicited feedback on the draft from all across Ravenswood. Our CCRMS student vision team shared their thoughts and spoke at a fishbowl conversation with adults in the community. Ravenswood staff at every site, including the district office, participated in professional development days focused on the profile. We conducted a community-wide survey and canvassing of families, partner organizations, local leaders, staff members, and students & alumni. And on April 3 the entire community was invited to witness the unveiling of the profile and celebrate our journey so far.

School Canvass

In April 2024, our schools graciously opened their doors to the community for our first-ever Ravenswood Promise School Canvass. Family and community leaders were invited to observe our classrooms and experience student learning in action.

Together with school and district staff, and grounded in our Learner Profile, the group uncovered bright spots and opportunities for growth. More details can be found in this report, and here are some highlights from the experience as shared by Ravenswood families:

I find joy in who I am and the communities I am a part of

- Classrooms are warm, inviting, and positive environments
- There is a strong sense of safety and trust among students and between students and adults
- Cultural richness is celebrated and ignites joy

I choose to approach my learning with a growth mindset

- Strong literacy interventions are challenging students to become stronger readers and writers
- Students understand what a “growth mindset” is and are empowered to make mistakes
- Students are excited to showcase their learning

I discover and explore with an open mind

- Students engage in new experiences through specials, clubs, and experiential learning (we saw gardening, lessons with guinea pigs and chickens, and so much more!)
- Students are encouraged to have agency and make choices about their learning
- Students have strong relationships with adults and peers that they can go to for help
